Ukrainian-born photojournalist Arthur Fellig (1899–1968), using the pseudonym Weegee, captured everyday life in New York City with a direct and honest documentary style. Though he shot evocative scenes of crime, homelessness, tragedy, heroism, and celebrity, “sensationalism is not Weegee’s purpose…[his photographs] are an extraordinary amalgam of sardonic humor, resentment of injustice, pathos, and compassion tinged with bitterness. They seem to say, over and over again, ‘Life should have some dignity,’” says fellow photographer Paul Strand.
This book was published in conjunction with the International Center of Photography’s exhibit of Weegee’s work, much of it previously unpublished.
