The story follows the life of Ray Carney who, while an honest furniture salesman in New York City’s Harlem neighborhood, finds himself being dragged into his cousin’s criminal activity. The narrative itself is, of course, compelling, but it is the vibrant depiction of mid-century Harlem that immerses the reader into Carney’s world.
