American humorist Art Buchwald’s (1925–2007) memoir, Leaving Home (1993), covers the more sober years of his childhood, shaped by his mother’s institutionalization and his time spent in foster care. “By the time I was six or seven, I said to myself, ‘This is ridiculous.
