American journalist and author Curtis Bill Pepper (1917–2014) recounts the unlikely friendship between Pope John XXIII (1881–1963) and communist Italian artist Giacomo Manzù (1908-1991). Based on Manzù’s own recollections, the book details how the sculptor came to be chosen for the Pope’s bronze bust and, ultimately, to sculpt the Doors of Death, the cathedral’s first new doors in 500 years.
