This celebration of Andean craftsmanship was published in conjunction with an exhibition at the German Textile Museum in 1991. The short but informative introduction describes the ritual and cultural significance of textiles to pre- and post-Colombian Indigenous life.
Following the text are stunning photographs of the woven textiles, dating from the 17th–19th centuries, presented without commentary. The geometric designs might at first resemble modern art on canvas, but closer inspection reveals their utilitarian purposes.
This copy comes from the personal collection of Iris and Carl Apfel. Iris Apfel (1921–2024) was a fashion icon and a renowned designer and textile expert.
