Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1994) is a semi-fictionalized account of the real 1981 murder of local Savannah, GA prostitute Danny Hansford. The narrative is lushly characterized with the people and places who defined the deep south in the late 20th century—both the famous and the marginalized.
This copy comes from the personal collection of Iris and Carl Apfel. Iris Apfel (1921–2024) was a fashion icon and a renowned designer and textile expert who went into business with her husband Carl from 1950 to 1992. The book is inscribed, “For Iris + Carl, All the best from Chablis, Minerva + me! John Berendt 12/6/95,” referencing two important characters in the book, trans club performer Lady Chablis and root doctor Minerva, the latter based on Valerie Boles.
