Samuel Bookbinder, a Dutch-Jewish immigrant to Philadelphia, opened Bookbinders sea food restaurant in the 1890s. While Samuel left the restaurant to a Jewish charity, his grandsons opened their own namesake restaurant at the 215 South 15th location in 1935. That location closed in 2004.

The Old Original Bookbinders restaurant was the separate entity which had passed through the charity bequeathing and subsequent ownership. Near Fine. Item #260
