The Light at the End of History is a remarkable artistic survey of the United States’ nuclear history. Photographer Abbey Hepner presents a seven-part series of images, each part featuring a different technique, which call attention to the frequent invisibility and banality of the remaining evidence of nuclear activity.
The first series, for example, involves x-ray photographs of craters where nuclear bombs were tested. The color reversal fills the craters with light and activity where now there is none.
The second series is more personal, featuring cyanotype prints of DNA sequences and the over-1400 dates of nuclear tests on bone. Here, Hepner, who grew up between the Nevada Test Site and the Idaho National Laboratory, remarks that members of her own family suffered from a leukemia with a known connection to nuclear testing.
The fifth section’s images were developed using a 19th century technique utilizing uranium. The works’ display in gallery features a ticking geiger counter at the center of the room.
