An interesting account of five Jewish men who ventured into the western colonial frontier to make their fortunes, or at least to make do. Most of them were peddlers who took advantage of families firmly rooted back east, to and from whom supplies could be sent. And each made profound efforts to establish themselves as welcome allies in Native communities, learning languages, advocating rights, and doing business. Of course, there were also plenty of opportunities for conflict.
A new angle of scholarship, perhaps, for those interested in the early days of westward expansion.
