In 1942, the residents of Japanese descent living on Bainbridge Island, located in Puget Sound, were exiled to internment camps. The local newspaper owners Millie and Walt Woodward used the periodical to speak out and publish articles written by imprisoned Japanese-American citizens.
In Defense of Our Neighbors (2008), written by the Woodwards' daughter Mary, is about the small island community’s role in telling and preserving stories that otherwise might have been suppressed.
