Dorothy Dinnerstein (1923–1992) was a psychologist and a feminist who made the case in The Mermaid and the Minotaur (1976) for both parents in heteronormative relationships to take part in child rearing. The crux of her argument is that societal expectations of one-sided child rearing by the mother lays the groundwork for sexist and patriarchal belief systems.
