Dr. Sylvester Andral Kilmer was a student of homeopathic remedies and eventually launched his own line of medicines, the most famous of which was Dr. Kilmer’s Swamp Root Kidney Liver and Bladder Cure. His advertising boasted the absence of “calomel, mercury, creosote, morphine, opium, strychnine, cocaine, nitrate potash (salt-peter), bromide potassium, nor any narcotic alkaloid” in his products.
A part of his success in the business was smart marketing and branding. His annual almanacs—published by Kilmer’s own press—while noting horoscopes, holidays, and dream interpretation for the year, mostly advertised the company’s medicines and testimonials of their use.
